Excess data on a TPG Mobile SIM only plan is charged in two stages, and the stage matters more than the rate. Understanding which stage your usage lands in is the difference between a $10 charge and a several-hundred-dollar one.
Stage one: inside the included tier
The included data on these plans is itself charged per KB or part thereof, and the published rate depends on the plan: $0.0016 per MB for Small, $0.0010 for Medium, and $0.0007 for both Large and Extra Large. That rate is what applies while you are within the included allowance, and it is why the larger plans are cheaper per MB even before any excess is used.
Stage two: the block charge
Beyond the included data, the summary sets a flat charge of $10 for extra 2GB, rounded up to the nearest GB and charged per 2GB block or part thereof. A single day of heavy usage can trip several blocks, and the rounding rule means a small overrun costs the same as a full block.
| Plan | Included data | Included rate | Excess block |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 12GB | $0.0016 per MB | $10 for extra 2GB |
| Medium | 25GB | $0.0010 per MB | $10 for extra 2GB |
| Large | 45GB | $0.0007 per MB | $10 for extra 2GB |
| Extra Large | 60GB | $0.0007 per MB | $10 for extra 2GB |
The number that catches people
Extra Large gives the same excess block price as Small. The difference between them is entirely in the included allowance and the per-MB rate, not in what you pay when you run out. A heavy user should size the plan to their use, not pick the plan with the biggest number.
