Satellite calling is the one place where a prepaid plan gives a genuinely unusual allowance. It matters in Australia, where the mobile network has real gaps in regional and remote areas, and where the alternative is paying per minute from a regular mobile.
The published allowances
| Destination | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Domestic satellite numbers | Unlimited calls |
| International satellite numbers | 5 minutes |
Both figures come from the same clause of the Boost Critical Information Summary, and the asymmetry is deliberate. Domestic satellite phones are reachable on the Australian satellite network, so an unlimited allowance is plausible; international satellite destinations are routed through third parties, so the allowance is a token five minutes.
What this does not cover
Satellite calling is separate from roaming, and the plan is for use in Australia. The unlimited domestic satellite allowance is a calling allowance, not a satellite data allowance, and nothing in this summary says anything about data over satellite. We mark that unknown rather than assume it.
Other providers, different picture
The TPG Mobile SIM only plans exclude calls to satellite phones outright. So the satellite allowance is a specific feature of one provider network arrangement, not a category feature of Australian prepaid. If you need it, that is a filter you should apply before comparing prices.
What we could not verify. Where a provider has not published a figure we mark it unknown rather than estimate it. Re-read the provider page linked below on the day you decide.
